GU12 14-Oct-06: Oswald Rd 0-17 Barhill (HT 0-5)

The first question to ask is why are Barhill playing in this division? Last year they were in the Lancashire league playing against Man Utd and City, then they pop up in division 3 in our league! Right from the outset it became clear that they are a very organised and disciplined team who play lovely football, passing well moving of the ball and with a very good tight defence. The Oswald Rd fans were quick to accept this, and from that point onwards the day was just going to be about watching them play football around us. A pretty demoralising and frustrating way of spending a Saturday morning for everyone really.

We were down on numbers and only had the seven players with no options for subbing or even thinking about tactics. As well as this, we had a couple of girls with sleepover hangovers and were clearly very tired!

After about ten minutes we all knew what was coming and almost gave up. There was no spirit and no atmosphere from players or crowd.

To their credit Tara kept trying for all she was worth and Sophie A. got a few shots on target, one a free kick from way inside our own half. Becks kept her spirit up and pulled off a few great saves and rightly got the applause from the punters. But overall it was a game that we all just wanted to be over after about 20 mins. Because of her efforts Sophie A. was our player of the day and the nominated player of the day – nice one chuck !

(Post script: The Barhill manager thought we played well at the beginning and made them lift their game. We gave up too quickly and so they scored a hatful in the second half. However Ruq also told me that no-one in the team stopped trying, so I’m guessing that we got mixed up trying to handle their passing play in the second half – Kamal.)
