GU12 24-Mar-07: Unicorn Rubies 2-3 Oswald Rd (0-1) & (2-2)
Strange game with the league saying that this counted as two games, with a first half / second half result ? No one was too sure what this meant; anyway we won 3-2. Unicorn only had six players so we, unlike Barhill, sportingly also played with six. It was a bit of a stop/start performance with Sophie A admitting she wasn’t at her best before the game and Katie had a sleepover hangover. However there were a few positives came out of the game. Jazz and Zoe had good games in defence, both looking cool and confident. Winning tackles and playing the ball out intelligently. Jazz pulled off a few passes across her own goalmouth which normally would have been a no no. Sophie P looked confident when she stepped in as we rotated the players. Becks came to the game brimming with enthusiasm and played a blinder with her goal kicks virtually all making at least half way.
Our six a side team was playing well and it was Sophie A who opened the scoring. The Os looked good and I wasn’t too worried about Unicorn attacking as the defence looked good. Half time one nil, I think that meant we won that bit. During the first fifteen minutes of the second half we played some great passing football that had Unicorn all tied up. Ruq and Katie lifted their goal tally, Taz played a efficient role in midfield and defence as usual. We relaxed a little too much and let players play out of position, well it was the last game of the season and to their credit Unicorn took two goals from us. We sort of cruised the rest of the game with the tiredness starting to show. However for their efforts Jazz was player of the day first half and Becks deservedly was player second half. Unicorn nominated Jazz, she did play well and deserved it.

These were two reasonable results for Oswald Rd despite the scores (only a 1-0 win and a 2-2 draw against what were the bottom team) – the Rubies played well and were really trying for every ball, while we were a bit ‘over-relaxed’ and only really got out of first gear for a small spell in the first half and for the first part of the second half.
Again we missed loads of chances in the first half – and so did they. We got a goal from SophieA from a throw-in by Katie, 15 minutes into a spell where we were playing well. After we got the goal, the Rubies had a couple of chances, cutting through our defence, but Becks held firm and despite some defenders overplaying the ball when in dangerous positions we held out for the first half win. The Rubies goalie also played well and their defenders cleared the ball out of some tricky situations – helped a little by our attackers also overplaying the ball and trying to walk it into the net like Arsenal.
The second half started extremely well and we had out best spell of the game – we were passing the ball around very well and making intelligent runs off the ball. After only 5 minutes, Ruq setup Katie who controlled the ball well and coolly finished off the move with a goal. The spell continued and the Rubies defence were severely tested by our attackers but we almost had too many chances on goal and so were too relaxed with each one – missing most of them. Rubies tried to push forward but SophieA took the ball off their midfield and played a very intelligent pass forward which Ruq ran onto past a defender, controlled and side stepped the goalie before passing it into the net. Next time, please just hit it into goal, Ruqayyah – our nerves are already strained enough! Two-nil up and our brains totally deserted us – the Coaches did make a few changes but that was no reason to leave only one defender marking three players over and over! Everyone wandered forward and followed the ball like a team of U9s and twice Rubies simply passed the ball out of the crowd into the deserted
