This season the girls step up a level to a much much harder game – last season we played 7-a-side, on a less than half size pitch with halves of 30 minutes each and small 6’ by 12’ goals. In the coming season, we’ll be playing 9-a-side games on a three-quarter size pitch with 7’ by 21’ goals, using the offside rule and each half will last 35 minutes each – so fitness will be extremely important (it’s very hard to avoid being offside when you’re tired) as will accurate passing and running off the ball (thinking clearly and passing accurately are also hard to do when you’re tired). So I expect training to be tougher than last season with particular emphasis on fitness, speed and ball control. Sigh. Heh heh.
Anyway, with just 9 girls, dedicated though they are, it’s going to be difficult to last the season – injuries, sickness and holidays will take players away for a while – so we will need to recruit more girls. Especially as in the 2008/09 season we’ll be moving to 11-a-side games with full-size goals and full-size pitches. However, we’re training well and improving every week so by the end of the season we should be giving all the other teams a good game.
