10 Dec 2005, Girls U13: Oswald Rd 4 – 2 St Johns (HT:2-1)

After a slow start and many breaks through the St Johns defences St Johns managed to score with a rebound that slipped through Maniac’s hands. Not long afterwards Jammy managed to place the ball into the top left corner of the St Johns net. It looked like it was going to be a draw for half time but Giant scored a left-footed thriller just before the whistle went.

Not long into the second half Giant scored again. With Aphra and Hazard solid at the back and Lollypop strong in he middle St Johns had a hard time breaking through. But at a St John’s corner the ball was kicked into he penalty area and Jammy unfortunately tarred the ball into the net. Even though we had no subs and St Johns did we kept our heads high and carried on playing well. Jammy scored once more making the final score 4-2 to the Ozzie girls-well done!

Our midfield played very well in this game, leaving St Johns’ lone attacker starved of the ball in the first half. They were pushed on the defensive with Caitlin mostly on her own, but scored nevertheless – a soft goal from their first attack, the ball going past many defenders and surprising Roberta in goal. We then scored two good goals – both started with good passes from midfield and finished off with killer shots from Rayne and Frankie. This was Jody’s first time back in attack for a month (flu then goalie for a match) but she still showed good ball skills and had loads of shots. In the second half, St Johns attacked more, with Caitlin now getting more support but our defenders coped well. Rayne got another excellent goal which she deserved as she was the midfield lynchpin of most of our attacks. Towards the end of the match Frankie found the net with a typically cool finish, beating a defender and the keeper – with her left foot! Frankie’s goal was created by Jody who tried to dribble the ball through the centre, was tackled three times but got back up three times and got the ball back from the defenders each time! She gets my vote for never-say-die player of this match.
