05 May 2006, Girls U13: Oswald Rd 1 – 4 Woodbank United (HT:0-2)

Our final game of the season – and Woodbank United again! Aargh! This game had to be rearranged as the tournament season was now on us – so we played it at Chorlton Park, our home ground. Perhaps, we thought, Woodbank would be a little lazy, having already won the league …. we were wrong.

The slightly smaller goals on the Chorlton Park 7-a-side pitches proved costly as shot after shot from our forwards was stopped by their goalie. Woodbank, on the other hand, with their passing skills managed to get the ball to their forwards close to our goal and despite a lot of pressure from us they went two up just before half time.

In the second half we put a lot of pressure on the Woodbank goal, and Rayne managed to turn in a corner. 2-1 and the game was still alive! We had to commit players forward and Woodbank swiftly counter attacked, temporarily outnumbering our defence and scored a goal when the ball was squeezed in under Roberta. Roberta hurt her back in that dive – another quick counter from Woodbank and they scored again. Rayne took Roberta’s place in goal as the second half wound down but despite having a few more attacks, we couldn’t get past the Woodbank goalie. We’re still improving against Woodbank but we need to get even better.
