08 Apr 2006, Girls U13: Woodbank United 2 – 1 Oswald Rd (HT:0-1)
A very close game: Ozzie Girls fought hard all over the pitch. An obdurate defence stopped almost all of Woodbank’s attacks, and Roberta was equal to the few that slipped through. The solid defence allowed the midfield players to support attack well and we had lots of chances. One ball was played wide to Frankie who ran up the right wing (unusual as she’s normally on the left), and cut in to try and cross for Lucy. The swerve on the ball fooled the goalkeeper - it went straight into goal, despite the goalie managing to get her hands to it. We had other chances but their goalie was quick on her feet and managed to block us well. We were really missing Molly’s powerful shots and passes (she was on a school trip, skiing).
In the second half Woodbank threw everything at us and that meant that Jody had a few chances up front from clever through balls from Rayne and Hanaan. Unfortunately the rock hard surface meant that Jody couldn’t bring the ball under control quickly enough and most of these either went out or to their goalie. Then two devastating attacks from Woodbank in the dying minutes killed us off – both similar crosses from the left wing which were turned it by a Woodbank foot. Woodbank were happy as they had needed a point to make sure of the championship. We were left feeling down despite a good game as we should have got the points.
