Friday 8-Sep-2006 Girls U12
A new season starts for the Oswald Rd Girls teams tomorrow!Well one of them anyway - the U11s are now the U12s and after a good initial season where they finished 8th out of 10 with 3 wins and 3 draws (very good for a first season with many of the girls only playing on an irregular basis) they now hope to really improve their skills and team game at training and for the matches. They're in division 12c in the expanded U12s league - fixtures at http://smgfl.co.uk/results_u12C.htm
The U13s had an amazing season! In the 2004/05 season they finished last with zero points - though some of the losses towards the end of that season were close games. Last season 2005/06 they finished 4th! Not only that, they were only 2 points behind 3rd and 3 points behind Sale Utd in 2nd place. So how crucial was that 4-6 loss to Sale after we were leading 4-2?! And we lost a couple of other silly games (like to St Johns!). So, all-in-all, the team - inspired by some excellent coaching from Corrina and Shelley - had sprung from the bottom of the league to competing at the very top.
Unfortunately, the U13 league was a 7-a-side league and the SMGFL changed the U14 league to be an 11-a-side league - and we just couldn't get enough girls to run a team in the new league, so the team has disbanded. :-( (sob).
However, not all the girls have given up football - Bred (Hanaan), Afro (Aphra), Giant (Frankie) and Dodger (Lucy) have now joined Lisbon St Antonys U14s (blog here) and Smurf (Jody) has joined St Johns! Lollypop (Molly) is having a lie-in on Saturday mornings for a bit now, Jammy (Rayne) is concentrating on her athletics (yes, she is good at everything - probably even tiddlywinks) and Noodles (Niamh) won't be roughing up any attackers for bit as she has a break from football (she has starred in Raven on TV recently - unlucky to finish 3rd).
The last time the girls were together was at the presentation night on the 9th of June where Karl Marginson, the manager of FC United of Manchester, presented the awards and made an excellent speech about grassroots football. The girls managed to get a picture with the three players who also came along - Tony Coyne (who taught SportsPoint at Oswald Rd), Adie Orr (who was a student there) and Josh Howard (FCUM's creative dynamo).

Anyway, keep an eye on this blog for more brilliant match reports squeezed from reluctant kids.
Kamal.
