12 Nov 2005, Girls U13: Oswald Rd 6 – 2 Wythenshawe Town (HT:2-1)

1st half: This Match was a great victory for Oswald Rd!! If we hadn’t had possession, control or the space we would have lost (and the goals of course!). First half our defenders were sharp, staying with their players all the time, but no. 6 on the opposite team got the goal when she could have passed, Rayne (Jammy) nearly took the ball off her but she was too fast. Oswald reacted very well to that goal, from kick off Jammy took possession of the ball, she passed it to Jody (Smurf) who then passed it to Frankie (Giant), she took the ball up the pitch a bit and shot, on target!! The ball went shooting into the back of the net, 1-1. They had the ball from the kick off but then Jammy stole it off them, she dribbled up the pitch then she passed it to Giant, she passed it back to Jammy who dribbled passed the defenders and shot into the back of the net! 2-1 to Oswald Rd!!

2nd half: The 2nd half was even better for the team. Roberta kicked the ball out to Giant she dribbled it up to the half way line she had a player in front of her so she passed it to Molly (LP=lollypop) who went a bit further than the line she meant to pass it but it went into the top left hand corner of the net!! 3-1 to Oswald Rd!! Smurf and Aphra (Afro) came off and Annie (Loony) and Niamh (Noodles) came on. Noodles went into defence and Loony went into midfield, Jammy moved into strike. The ball had been kicked out by their goalie it was pretty bent if I must say so myself because it came all the way out to the right side of the pitch, Hanaan (Caution) got the ball and passed it to Jammy, she then ran up the pitch hoping to get a corner in but she did more than that, when she crossed it into the box the ball curled a bit and went into the top corner of the net!! 4-1 to Oswald Rd!!

Maniac (Roberta) kicked the ball out to Rayne but no.2 from their team got in her way, it deflected off her leg and came to Caution who then passed it down the line to Jammy, she went up a bit then she passed it to Giant who amazingly dribbled passed all their defenders and scored a nifty goal in the bottom corner of the net!! 5-1 to Oswald Rd!! Wyhenshawe tried to get back, but all their shots were off target. Noodles got the ball and passed it to Caution who ran passed 1 player and passed it to Jammy, she passed it to Giant who then tapped it back to Jammy she ran across the goal, the defender was shielding the goal but Loony (Annie) booted the ball into the back of the net, making it 6-1 to Oswald Rd. WELL DONE OZZIE GIRLS!!!!!!!!!

An excellent game for Ozzie girls – it was much harder work than the score line suggests, with Wythenshawe causing lots of problems for our defence and midfield. Our defence was lethargic to start and Wythenshawe got a messy goal when the defence all waited for each other. Then they woke up and very little got through thereafter, and Roberta dealt efficiently with any shots on goal from distance. Our midfield got the ball through to the attackers and soon the goal chances started flowing. Frankie coolly finished off a nice move with a dribble and shot into goal, and Rayne finished off another run with a powerful shot past the goalie. We missed loads and loads of chances though and Wythenshawe must have thought they were lucky to only go in 2-1 down at half time – it should have been 7-1! Maybe they even thought they could get a couple of goals in the second half and sneak a win? We’ll never know because after great half time talks from the coaches, Corrina and Shelley, the girls finally got settled and let loose. First a power drive from Molly was well saved but she just tried it again a few minutes later and this time it curled into the top corner. Then Niamh came on for Aphra and just blocked up the left side totally and Jody, who wasn’t her normal electric self, came off unwell and let Annie come on. At first, there was confusion as Jody was a forward and Annie was midfield but was initially told to go into defence. The coaches sorted it out and pushed Rayne further forward and Annie used her athletic speed and fitness to hare forwards to help attack whenever we had the ball but also get back to help midfield and defence when Wythenshawe attacked. Rayne then tortured their defenders with her dribbling skills before getting another great goal. Frankie kept going past player after player when she got the ball and was rewarded with a goal (left foot I believe!). Finally Annie finished off another great dribble from Rayne by simply whacking the ball into the net, sharp-shooter style, after running up yet again from midfield to help the attack. Rayne’s dad hadn’t seen the team play for a while and he was amazed at the team-play and individual skills – “they’re like a different team” he said to me, “at this rate, in a few months there’ll no-one in the league they can’t beat”.
